Giulia DE MASI

Biography

Giulia De Masi has a 20y+ mixed path between R&D in the private sector and Academia, both in Italy and United Arab Emirates, ranging from blue-sky research to applied research. 

She is currently Associate professor at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Principal Investigator of the Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) and Ocean Institute Abu Dhabi. After her PhD in Complex Networks , she was Post-doctoral Researcher in the Polytechnic University of Marche and Visiting Researcher at Hitachi Research Laboratory, in Nara, Japan. In 2008, she started working in the R&D field for the Marine industry (Snamprogetti Center of Excellence, Italy), joining the Department of Advanced Engineering Services and Technology Innovation Projects, where she led Industrial Research projects on AI and Machine Learning applied to Ocean environment. She worked in several academic institutions in Italy and UAE, before joining the Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi as Principal Scientist for 4 years. She has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications (including journals and conferences), 3 patents and more than 40 reports for Industry. She has been awarded as Women in Engineering (WIE) Propel laureate IEEE by Oceanic Engineering Society in liaison with WIE. Giulia is IEEE Senior Member, and AdCom member for the Oceanic Engineering Society.

Her main fields of expertise are Artificial Intelligence and Mathematical Modeling for Sustainability, Ocean and Environment, in particular Collective Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Science, with applications to Oceanic Engineering, leading international research collaborations. Her interest include bio-inspired marine robots for underwater ecosystem monitoring
