Luciano is a biologist and a geographer with a Master’s degree in Protected Areas and a postgraduate specialization in Theatre of the Oppressed Studies: Political-Pedagogical Practices. As a Protected Area Manager, he addressed land management processes on two different occasions in Minas Gerais, Brazil. He also studied and volunteered in protected areas in Ireland, Spain, Brazil, Peru, and Portugal. For over seven years, Luciano worked at the Mamirauá Institute for Sustainable Development, where he implemented participatory management strategies to strengthen associativism and organizational skills with Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the Amazon region. He is currently a PhD candidate in Territorial Development in Latin America and the Caribbean at São Paulo State University (UNESP), in a program developed in partnership with La Vía Campesina and the National School of Florestan Fernandes (ENFF), and works as an independent consultant. Luciano is a founding member of the Young Leaders in Protected and Conserved Areas of Latin America and the Caribbean Network (ReLLAC-Jovens), an honorary member of the ICCA Consortium, a member of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, part of Brazil’s Expert Assessment Group for the Green List (EAGL-Brasil), and serves as Executive Secretary of the Latin American Group on Governance of Protected and Conserved Areas by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (GELIPAC). He is also a Joker (Curinga) in the Theatre of the Oppressed, using participatory art to foster critical dialogue and collective action.
