Trevor SANDWITH

Biography

Trevor Sandwith is a South African/Swiss ecologist, educationist and nature conservation strategist who promotes the integration of protected and conserved areas in sustainable economic and social development.  He has experience in the governance and management of protected area systems, and in mainstreaming biodiversity considerations into development policies and planning.  At international level, he has specialized in transboundary governance of protected areas and in seeking recognition of ecosystem-based approaches to address climate change. He is Director of IUCN’s Centre for Conservation Action, responsible for thematic work on global conservation action involving protected and conserved areas, world heritage, oceans, forest and grasslands, water and wetlands, species conservation, climate change and energy, food systems and agriculture, human rights in conservation, and people and nature (one health, urban, sports for nature, youth and culture)
